In Dallas Willard's book, The Divine Conspiracy, a phrase caught my attention the other day as I was reading about our need for discipleship/apprenticeship. In talking about the parable of the Treasure Hid in the Field, he said the finder "embraced the treasure." That reminded me that in our society we don't even really know what the "treasure" may be. In my own experience the treasure is not the earthen vessel that Paul talks about in 2 Corinthians 4:7, but the Treasure of the Holy Spirit of Jesus that has been given us as the greatest of the Grace Gifts of God -- the Gift of Himself in us.
It is easy to value the wrong things. We tend to argue about the earthen vessels. But the Treasure is Christ Himself IN us. Without that Treasure we are hugging stuff to ourselves that crowds out the important and the truly valuable in life. I am being daily reminded, even in my newly-begun retirement time, that I am still called to "embace the Treasure" and let that Treasure, Christ Himself, impart value and importance to the life I am presently really living.
Here's hoping you find and embrace the Treasure for yourself.
Dr. Darrell
